Salman “Sal” Khan was born in Metairie, Louisiana, on October 11, 1976. His parents are Bengali, his father was from Barisal, Bangladesh and his mother was from Murshidabad, India.
Khan attended Grace King High School where he also worked as a cartoonist. He was one of the brightest students in the university; he took upper-level mathematics at the University of New Orleans while he was in high school and graduated valedictorian in 1994.
Khan attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Course 6 (electrical engineering and computer science), and another bachelor’s degree in Course 18 (mathematics), in 1998.

Khan started his career as a huge fund analyst intern at PARC, then he worked from 2003 to 2009 at Connective Capital Management. In an interview with Forbes, Khan said that when he was a huge fund analyst he saw that a lot of people ask about debt vs. equity, renting vs. buying and this was the main motive for him to start teaching personal finance in his online education platform “Khan Academy”.
